  17. Network Application Installer (N.A.I.) offers an inexpensive and fully 
  18. extensible system to completely automate the installation of Windows 
  19. applications on any network, whether the applications will run locally or
  20. from the file server.  No limitations on the number of applications
  21. you can install, and no extra modules to purchase.  Add new applications
  22. yourself as you acquire them.  With N.A.I., an end user can completely 
  23. install OR REMOVE a Windows application with a click of the mouse, making a 
  24. breeze out of the configuration of new nodes or the upgrading of applications 
  25. on all nodes.

  27. The end user program, NAI.EXE, reads the file WINAPPS.LST, which lists all 
  28. available applications.  When a user selects an application for installation 
  29. or removal, NAI.EXE reads a .DAT file for that application (filename.DAT), 
  30. which instructs NAI.EXE what steps to take to install that application.

  32. The LAN Administrator program, NAIMAINT.EXE, provides a quick, simple, user-
  33. friendly means of maintaining WINAPPS.LST and all application .DAT files.
  34. You can create new .DAT files yourself for any Windows application --in 
  35. minutes!

  37. Included with N.A.I. are ten sample application .DAT files for popular 
  38. Windows applications.  To get a quick look at the way NAI.EXE looks to the
  39. user and the way NAIMAINT.EXE operates, place all the files in the same
  40. directory and run the executables.  (You will need to place the file 
  41. VBRUN100.DLL in your \WINDOWS directory--it has not been included in NAI.ZIP 
  42. because it would more than double the size of the .ZIP file, and it is widely
  43. available by itself, for example, as VBRUN1.ZIP in the Microsoft forum on 
  44. CompuServe, and with many other applications).

  46. NOTE: The included sample application .DAT files, while valid and workable,
  47. are provided as examples only.  If you choose to use them in a production
  48. environment, be advised that Aleph Systems makes no guarantees of their 
  49. accuracy or applicability.

  51. In any case, please use NAIMAINT.EXE to examine the sample .DAT files carefully
  52. and make any necessary changes before using them in your network.  For example,
  53. in the sample files, drive F: is used for all shared files located on the 
  54. server, and drive C: is used for all user- or node-specific files.  You will
  55. probably need to change this drive designation to the appropriate letter(s) 
  56. for your users, and you may also need to change the directories listed in the 
  57. sample files to match those on your file servers.

  59. With NAIMAINT.EXE, you will find these changes quick and easy to make.  You 
  60. will also find that creating new application .DAT files is also a quick and 
  61. easy process.
